Pipe & Fitting Market Intelligence for International Buyers — Week of October 5, 2026

The National Day holiday is over, and China’s steel market did not come back the way the “Golden October” narrative promised. Instead, it came back down. The composite index eased to 3,510.40 on October 9, and — more telling — national steel inventories turned back up for the first time after weeks of decline, with medium plate and hot rolled coil leading the rebuild. Cangzhou’s own prices confirmed the move: spiral welded pipe dropped 50 CNY/ton, and Tangshan’s angle steel and welded pipe opened the week lower. Fittings held broadly flat, with only large-diameter seamless elbows, welded elbows and big-bore flanges easing 2–5 CNY/pc.

Key Takeaways

The Lange Steel composite price index stood at 3,510.40 on October 9, down 2.00 points (−0.06%) day-on-day.

National spot averages, October 9: rebar ¥3,251/ton (flat), hot rolled coil ¥3,275/ton (−1), medium plate ¥3,514/ton (−1), hot rolled strip ¥3,249/ton (−1), welded pipe 4 inch ¥3,489/ton (−12), cold rolled coil ¥3,740/ton (flat). Welded pipe led the declines at −12.

National steel inventories turned back up. Full-caliber steel stock reached 14.6246 million tons on October 9, up 2.95% week-on-week and reversing the prior downtrend. Mill-held stock +2.59%, social stock +3.20%. The rebuild is concentrated in plate: hot rolled coil social stock +5.51% and medium plate +6.27% week-on-week, both accelerating.

Cangzhou local pipe prices fell on the post-holiday restart: Cangzhou spiral welded pipe (沧州螺旋) down 50 CNY/ton to ¥3,560–3,730/ton ex-works; Cangzhou square tube down 10; Cangzhou angle steel down 20. Tangshan followed — angles down 20 (Zhengfeng 50×50×5 at ¥3,320), welded pipe (Youfa) down 30.

Demand outlook improving: the September SOPI steel operating index came in at 54.1 (down 5.3 on the month), and the Metallurgical Industry Information & Standardization Institute projects modest demand recovery in October with mill profitability partially repaired.

Holiday property demand was the bright spot: new-home sales in 25 key cities rose 33.8% year-on-year on a daily average over Oct 1–7, and existing-home resales in 11 cities rose 42.8% — construction-chain demand entering Q4 is firmer than the steel tape suggests.

Two weeks ago the story was “no directional conviction.” This week the direction is down, and it is the structural products — H-beam (−12), I-beam (−14), channel (−12), welded pipe (−12) — leading it, not rebar. On the futures side, the October 8 night session was weak across the board: iron ore main contract −1.16% to 682.5 (the worst performer), with rebar, hot rolled coil and coke all down less than 0.38% and coking coal marginally up to 1,477. The market is still working through the post-holiday reset and is waiting on the second round of coke price cuts to land before it can stabilise. Rebar 2701 traded at 3,079 (−0.03%) at the October 9 midday session.

2. Raw Materials: Cost Floor Still Intact, For Now

Weak

Iron ore futures (2701, night session)

¥682.5/ton

−1.16%

Billet has followed finished steel lower, with Qian’an down 20 and Songting down 30 on October 8. The raw-material floor that held through most of Q3 has cracked in the finished-product layer but not yet in the fuel layer — coking coal is range-bound near 1,477 while coke awaits a second round of producer price cuts. Iron ore is the outlier again: hot metal output is steady (see below), so ore has refused to follow, and it led the night-session decline once demand expectations, not supply, drove the tape. The direction to watch: if the anticipated coke cuts land, mills gain cost relief even as finished prices soften — a margin-friendly combination for producers, not necessarily for buyers chasing the bottom.

3. Supply: Inventories Turn, Output Holds

The supply picture is where this week diverges from the September standstill. National steel inventories stopped falling and started building:

Inventory layer (Oct 9)

Volume

Week-on-Week

Full-caliber steel stock

14.6246 million tons

+2.95% (turned up)

Mill-held stock

6.0642 million tons

+2.59% (turned up)

Social (channel) stock

8.5604 million tons

+3.20% (turned up)

— of which hot rolled coil (social)

3.1258 million tons

+5.51% (accelerating)

— of which medium plate (social)

1.3906 million tons

+6.27% (accelerating)

— of which construction steel (social)

4.0440 million tons

+0.50% (barely up)

Read the split carefully. The rebuild is almost entirely in plate — hot rolled coil and medium plate social stocks are climbing and accelerating, with medium plate full-caliber stock up 19.36% year-on-year. Construction steel is nearly flat (+0.50% social), which is consistent with the resilient holiday property-demand data. In other words: plate (used in manufacturing, shipbuilding, pressure vessels) is restocking ahead of confirmed demand, while construction-chain material is not overbuilt.

Hot metal output confirms the caution: the 201-furnace sample showed daily output of 2.296 million tons, down 0.42% week-on-week, even as the October monthly average (2.296 Mt/day) runs 0.0203 Mt/day above September. Mills restarted idled lines after maintenance, but the pickup in utilisation did not translate into output — some furnaces trimmed voluntarily to avoid finished-goods build-up. Supply discipline is holding better than the inventory headline suggests.

4. Cangzhou Pipe & Fittings Prices — Week of October 5

Cangzhou fitting and pipe prices split this week, breaking the three-week flat run. Pipe moved down with the local steel restart; fittings stayed broadly flat, with only large-diameter seamless elbows, welded elbows and big-bore flat-welded flanges easing 2–5 CNY/pc on the post-holiday restart. Reference prices below are from our Cangzhou pipe fittings price tracker, as of October 9, 2026 (13% VAT included, converted at 1 USD = 6.72 CNY).

Welded elbows (Q235B) ranged from ¥2–866/pc across the same size range. On the pipe side, seamless steel pipe (20#) held at approximately ¥3,900–5,650/ton, and high-frequency welded steel pipe (Q235B) at approximately ¥3,510–3,760/ton — essentially unchanged bands at the fitting level even as the underlying Cangzhou pipe market reset lower. The divergence is the point: the fitting works price their product against material cost plus processing, and they have so far absorbed the first week of the post-holiday slide on common sizes rather than pass it through immediately.

5. Macro & FX: Tighter Global Trade, Stronger CNY

Two threads matter for importers this week. First, trade frictions are tightening at exactly the moment demand data improves: the WTO raised its 2026 global goods-trade growth forecast from 1.9% to 3.9% (2027: 4.1%), yet China–EU trade talks in Beijing this week are running against a hardening EU stance on further import restrictions. Buyers with EU-facing programmes should factor tariff and compliance risk into Q1 2026 lead times, not just price.

Second, FX. The onshore renminbi closed at 6.70140 on October 8, up 39 pips, with offshore at 6.70476 — the strongest zone in months. For USD-denominated buyers this makes Chinese offers marginally more expensive than early September; on multi-month procurement cycles, it is worth agreeing the exchange-rate basis explicitly in the quote, as we advised three weeks ago.

6. What This Means for Buyers

The fitting market is not following steel down — yet. Three flat weeks, then a local pipe reset that fittings have not matched. That gap is your window: material costs are falling while fitting reference prices hold, so quotations placed now against the tracker still reflect the pre-reset band. Expect mills to pass some cost relief through in one to two weeks if the slide continues.

Standard sizes have genuine negotiating room. With full-caliber inventories up 2.95%, plate stocks accelerating, and common specifications (108 / 219 / 273) well supplied, full-truck and repeat-order buyers can push for concessions now — the supply picture is materially looser than it was in September.

Book non-standard and heavy-wall early. The premium on thick-wall, large-diameter and precision cold-drawn product reflects tight supply, not opportunism. Lead time, not price, is the binding constraint there, and the plate restock does not apply to those niches.

Watch coke’s second price cut, not rebar. The next real signal is whether the anticipated second round of coke cuts lands. If it does, mills gain cost relief and the downside on finished steel extends. If coal and coke stabilise instead, the floor holds and current prices are near fair value.

Lock FX on long cycles. At a central-parity zone of 6.70, the renminbi is the strongest in months. Agree the exchange-rate basis explicitly in any quote spanning more than a few weeks.

Pipe & Fitting Market Intelligence for International Buyers — Week of September 15, 2026

China’s steel market spent the third week of September standing still — and then the ground shifted underneath it. Spot prices across most categories moved by less than ¥6/ton for five consecutive sessions. What changed was not price but cost: coking coal broke down to a September low in the September 17 night session, hours after the US Federal Reserve raised rates for the first time in more than three years. Cangzhou fitting prices, once again, did not move at all.

Key Takeaways

The Lange Steel composite price index stood at 3,530.50 on September 17, up 2.10 points (+0.06%) day-on-day — capping a week of sub-0.1% daily moves.

National spot averages, September 17: rebar ¥3,259/ton (+6), hot rolled coil ¥3,316/ton (+3), medium plate ¥3,549/ton (+1), hot rolled strip ¥3,297/ton (+1), welded pipe 4 inch ¥3,580/ton (flat), cold rolled coil ¥3,767/ton (flat).

Cangzhou pipe fitting prices were unchanged on every single trading day this week. Flanges ¥5–63/pc, seamless elbows ¥2–1,051/pc, welded elbows ¥3–876/pc, seamless pipe ¥3,900–5,650/ton, HFW welded pipe ¥3,510–3,760/ton.

Macro: the US Federal Reserve raised rates 25bp to 3.75–4.00% on September 16 — its first increase since July 2023. Sixteen of eighteen officials expect at least one more hike this year, pointing to policy rates above 4% by December.

Cost side: coking coal fell 2.51% to 1,572 in the September 17 night session, a September low; coke fell 1.31% to 2,038. This is the first real crack in the raw-material floor that held through most of Q3.

Supply: China’s August crude steel output was 74.61 million tons, down 3.7% year-on-year, with daily output at 2.4068 million tons (−3.0% month-on-month). Seamless pipe mill utilisation rose to 72.95%, up 1.84 percentage points week-on-week.

The ranges tell the story better than the averages: ten of twelve categories moved by ¥3/ton or less. This is a market with no directional conviction. Hot rolled coil averaged ¥3,317/ton across ten key cities — up just ¥4 on the day, but down ¥27 on the week, the widest weekly swing of any category.

On the futures side, the September 17 night session turned negative across the board: coking coal 1,572 (−2.51%), coke 2,038 (−1.31%), rebar (−0.42%), hot rolled coil (−0.3%), with iron ore the sole gainer at +0.35%. Coke closed at its lowest level since the start of September.

Last week we wrote that a rising cost floor was limiting the downside on finished steel. That floor is now under its first real test. Coking coal’s break below recent support matters because it removes the strongest single argument mills had for holding offers — and it is happening while finished-steel demand is still failing to confirm the “Golden September” seasonal rebound.

Iron ore is the exception: hot metal output has not fallen, so ore has refused to follow coal lower. That divergence is worth watching closely. If mills eventually trim output, ore catches down, and the cost floor weakens further.

3. Policy Watch: A Rulebook for the Cost Floor, and a Hawkish Fed

Two developments this week pull in opposite directions.

The cost-floor rulebook is now in place. People’s Daily published an authoritative interpretation of the NDRC and SAMR notice on below-cost, disorderly competition in key industrial goods, confirming the framework we flagged on September 10: cost-accounting rules, warning procedures, and cost investigation authority. This is policy now, not speculation. It raises the political cost of predatory pricing and should, over time, compress the gap between the cheapest and the fairest offers in the market.

But the Fed turned hawkish. On September 16, the Federal Reserve raised its target range 25 basis points to 3.75–4.00% — the first increase since July 2023. The dot plot showed 16 of 18 participants expecting at least one more hike this year, implying policy rates above 4% by December. European and Japanese central banks moved in the same direction, partly to defend their currencies against imported inflation.

The transmission to Chinese steel is indirect but real. A stronger dollar cools global commodity demand and pressures energy and chemicals — US crude settled at $101.09/bbl, down 1.31%. More directly for buyers, the renminbi central parity strengthened to 6.7580 per dollar on September 17, the strongest since February 2023, which makes Chinese offers marginally more expensive in USD terms.

On the demand side, August trade data was solid: China’s goods trade rose 19.8% year-on-year to ¥4.6455 trillion, with exports up 18.6%. That underpins manufacturing plate and pipe demand heading into Q4, even as construction stays soft.

4. Cangzhou Pipe Fittings Prices — Week of September 15

For the second consecutive week, Cangzhou fitting and pipe prices did not move. This week’s distinction is that they were flat on every single trading day — September 11, 14, 15, 16 and 17 each printed a zero change across flanges, seamless elbows, welded elbows, seamless pipe and welded pipe.

Reference prices below are from our Cangzhou pipe fittings price tracker, as of September 17, 2026 (13% VAT included, converted at 1 USD = 6.74 CNY).

Welded elbows (Q235B) ranged from ¥3–876/pc across the same size range. On the pipe side, seamless steel pipe (20#) was quoted at approximately ¥3,900–5,650/ton, and high-frequency welded steel pipe (Q235B) at approximately ¥3,510–3,760/ton — identical to the previous week’s bands.

What is happening upstream has not reached Cangzhou at all. National seamless pipe mill utilisation rose to 72.95%, up 1.84 percentage points week-on-week, and mills across north China — Tianjin, Tangshan and Cangzhou — brought idled lines back online after maintenance. Inventory is rebuilding at the same time that seasonal demand is underdelivering. That configuration normally softens prices, yet the fitting market absorbed it without moving.

Where the market is not flat: heavy-wall, large-diameter non-standard and precision cold-drawn seamless pipe remain in tight supply and still carry a premium over the 108×4.5mm mainstream specification. Common sizes — 108, 219, 273 — are well stocked, and mills are offering modest concessions on full-truck and long-term repeat orders.

5. What This Means for Buyers

Concessions are available on standard sizes. With seamless mills at 72.95% utilisation and common specifications well supplied, full-truck orders of 108 / 219 / 273 sizes have genuine negotiating room. This reverses last week’s advice, and it reflects a materially changed supply picture.

Non-standard and heavy-wall items should still be booked early. The premium on thick-wall, large-diameter and precision cold-drawn product reflects tight supply, not opportunism. Lead time, not price, remains the binding constraint there.

Watch coking coal, not rebar. The most important variable for the next month is whether coal and coke continue lower. If they do, expect mills to pass some of it through — with the one-to-two-week lag this market always runs. If coal stabilises, the floor holds.

FX is now a live variable. With the central parity at 6.7580, a two-and-a-half-year high, USD-denominated offers are slightly less competitive than they were in early September. On long procurement cycles, it is worth agreeing the exchange-rate basis explicitly in the quote.

Pipe & Fitting Market Intelligence for International Buyers — Week of September 8, 2026

China’s steel market drifted slightly lower through the second week of September 2026. Prices fell, but gently — this was a narrow, controlled decline rather than a break. For international buyers of pipe fittings, the more important signal is what is happening underneath the surface: raw material costs are rising, a new policy floor is being set, and Cangzhou fitting prices have not moved.

Key Takeaways

The Lange Steel composite price index closed at 3,547 on September 10, down 5 points (−0.1%) day-on-day — a first modest pullback after two sessions of gains.

National spot averages: rebar ¥3,271/ton (−6), hot rolled coil ¥3,344/ton (−9), medium plate ¥3,558/ton (−1). Section steel slipped only marginally (H-beam −¥3/ton); the weakest categories were hot rolled coil (−¥9) and galvanized sheet (−¥12).

Tangshan Qian’an billet slipped ¥10 to ¥3,030/ton (tax-inclusive, ex-works), while billet inventory in Tangshan sample warehouses stood at roughly 1.1634 million tons.

Policy: the NDRC and SAMR issued a joint notice targeting below-cost, disorderly competition in key industrial goods — establishing cost-accounting rules and warning procedures, not direct price intervention.

Cangzhou pipe fitting prices held steady in early September: flat-welded flanges ¥5–63/pc, seamless elbows ¥2–1,051/pc, welded elbows ¥3–876/pc.

For buyers: a falling upstream combined with a rising cost floor is historically the calmest moment to plan Q4 volume. The fitting quotes have not yet caught up to raw material costs.

1. Upstream Steel: A Gentle Decline, Not a Break

September 10 spot prices across the main categories, on a national average basis, according to Lange Steel Network monitoring:

Cold rolled coil

On the futures side, the whole black complex closed lower on September 10, giving back part of the previous rebound: rebar main contract 3,146 (−18), hot rolled coil 3,365 (−16), coke 2,136.5 (−27.5), coking coal 1,649 (−13), iron ore 730.5 (−7).

The important detail for anyone reading this as a buying signal: the decline is being driven by demand, not by cost. Supply is easing — mills are running thinner margins, maintenance has increased, and daily hot metal output is trending down. But demand is the real drag. Even with the traditional “Golden September” construction season underway and the summer heat gone, terminal restarts have been slow, rigid demand from construction is weak, and manufacturing plate orders have improved only marginally.

2. Raw Materials and Tangshan Billet

Tangshan Qian’an billet (ex-works, tax incl.)

¥2,105/ton

Flat

Tangshan billet inventory (sample warehouses)

≈1.1634 million tons

—

Note the divergence here: finished steel fell, but the cost side did not follow. Coke’s fifth round of price increases has settled, coking coal remains firm, and iron ore edged up. Mill production costs are still climbing, which is precisely what is limiting the downside on finished prices.

3. Policy Watch: Two Regulators Target Below-Cost Competition

On September 10, the National Development and Reform Commission and the State Administration for Market Regulation issued a joint notice addressing disorderly, below-cost competition in important industrial goods. The notice sets out cost-accounting rules for determining when pricing falls below a reasonable cost baseline, provides for warnings and admonitions to suspected participants, and authorises cost investigation and accounting where necessary.

Two things are worth separating here. First, this is not a price-fixing measure — it does not intervene in normal independent pricing. It defines the yardstick for what counts as predatory competition. Second, its practical effect on the market is to support a floor, not to drive a rally. For buyers, that means the probability of a sharp downward break in Chinese steel prices just fell, while the probability of a sharp upward spike did not rise.

4. Cangzhou Pipe Fittings Prices — Early September

Against a drifting upstream, Cangzhou fitting prices have been stable. The reference prices below are from our Cangzhou pipe fittings price tracker, as of September 10, 2026 (13% VAT included, converted at 1 USD = 6.74 CNY).

Welded elbows (Q235B) ranged from ¥3–876/pc across the same size range. On the pipe side, seamless steel pipe (20#) was quoted at approximately ¥3,900–5,650/ton, and high-frequency welded steel pipe (Q235B) at approximately ¥3,510–3,760/ton.

The pattern to note is the same one we flagged in August, and it has now persisted for a month: upstream steel moves, Cangzhou fittings do not. Downstream fitting demand has not yet caught up with the raw material rally, so mills have absorbed the cost pressure rather than passing it on.

5. What This Means for Buyers

Fitting quotes historically lag upstream steel by one to two weeks. We are now in an unusual configuration: raw material costs are firm and rising, finished steel is drifting down, and fitting prices are flat. That combination does not last — either steel falls far enough to pull fittings down, or fitting mills pass through costs and quotes rise.

The policy notice tilts the odds toward the second outcome. Below-cost competition is now in scope for regulatory scrutiny, which removes a common pressure valve for mills facing thin margins. Combined with coke’s fifth increase and rising iron ore, the cost floor under Chinese steel has become harder.

Practically, for Q4 planning:

High-moving items — flanges DN50–DN200, seamless elbows 60×5 to 219×8 — are the ones most likely to reprice first. Confirming volume now locks the current level.

Watch coking coal. The current market is being held down by a rhythm adjustment in coal and coke; if that reverses, the black complex lifts and fittings follow.

Delivery slots, not just prices. Mill maintenance is already reducing output. Booking capacity early is worth as much as shaving a few CNY per piece.

Slip-on / flat-welded flanges (Q235B): DN25 at ¥5/pc up to DN300 at ¥63/pc. No movement at any diameter break.

Seamless elbows (20#): small-bore 32×3 remains at ¥2/pc; workhorse sizes 89×6 (¥15), 108×5 (¥17) and 159×6 (¥39) all flat; large-bore 325×10 at ¥256 and 630×10 at ¥1,051 unchanged.

Welded elbows (Q235B): the 89×6 size holds at ¥7/pc, 219×8 at ¥87/pc — identical to mid-August levels.

For buyers comparing suppliers, stability is useful signal in itself: when mill-side costs pause but quotes do not drift upward, there is little speculative premium baked into current offers from Hebei workshops.

2. Pipe Prices (Per Ton): Firming Modestly

Seamless pipe quotes remain spread across a wide specification-dependent band — from ¥3,900/ton (89×6) up to ¥5,650/ton for small odd-size 25×3 — while HFW welded pipe clusters tightly at ¥3,510–¥3,530/ton for common diameters (76 through 273). Large-diameter LSAW material (1422×12 through 2032×18) sits at ¥4,050–¥4,150/ton.

Since our late-August snapshot, seamless material has eased about ¥20/ton while welded pipe has firmed about ¥20/ton — fitting prices have not moved at all. Downstream fitting makers continue to source strip and plate without urgency, and export orders are being confirmed at pre-existing levels rather than renegotiated.

3. Exchange-Rate Update: Why the USD Column Moved

One visible change on our price page is the USD column. Previous editions converted at a rounded 7.25 CNY/USD reference; the page now uses the live market rate (6.74). Same RMB prices, more precise dollars — a DN100 flange listed at ¥19 now correctly reads $2.82 instead of an over-rounded estimate.

Two practical notes for importers: first, always confirm which rate a supplier’s proforma assumes — hidden FX buffers are common; second, when the yuan firms, locking tonnage early protects your margin. Our tables now leave no room for ambiguity either way.

4. What Buyers Should Do This Week

Confirm quantity brackets before quoting — piece-price fittings move by diameter break, not proportionally; volume tiers can still earn concessions even in a flat market.

Audit supplier FX assumptions — compare any USD offer against the RMB price at the real rate.

Book mixed-container programs now — steady markets are the easiest window to consolidate flanges, elbows and pipe in one shipment without price-change risk between items.

Pipe & Fitting Market Intelligence for International Buyers — Mid-August 2026

Key Takeaways

Seamless pipe prices held weak-stable across China, with regional divergence: East China saw ¥10–20/ton concessions on real orders while North China mills maintained price floors.

Welded pipe (4″×3.75mm) in Tangshan held at ¥3,370/ton, flat week-on-week; galvanized pipe at ¥4,000/ton, also flat. Beijing and Tianjin saw minor ±¥10–30/ton fluctuations.

Helical/spiral welded pipe (219×6mm, Q235B) from Tangshan mills quoted at approximately ¥3,400–3,500/ton, with larger diameters (529×8mm, 720×8mm) at similar levels.

North China pipe mill inventories rose to 608,800 tons (+33,500 tons week-on-week), reflecting cautious downstream procurement and a “buy-as-needed” mentality.

Cost floor from strip steel and billet prevented deep price declines, but demand-side weakness kept upside limited — a classic “stuck market” pattern.

For overseas buyers: the current price stability creates a predictable window for procurement planning, with Chinese pipe fitting export competitiveness intact.

1. Seamless Pipe Market: Weak-Stable with Regional Divergence

As of August 18, China’s seamless pipe spot market maintained a weak-stable trajectory with noticeable regional divergence, according to Lange Steel Network’s monitoring data.

East China (Wuxi, Hangzhou distribution hubs): Mainstream resources held nominal prices, but traders executed at prior low-quote levels. Black-sector futures volatility prompted some merchants to offer ¥10–20/ton concessions on real orders to secure volume.

North and Central China: Mill agent price-floor constraints kept mainstream quotes firm. Merchants had willingness to move volume but lacked autonomy to cut listed prices independently — meaningful price adjustments required policy windows from upstream mills.

Terminals released only sporadic rigid demand, with no batch procurement signals. Overall trading volume remained low. The off-season fundamental weakness showed no substantive improvement, and prices remained susceptible to futures-board fluctuations.

Looking ahead, seamless pipe mainstream quotes are expected to continue weak-stable oscillation with limited nominal changes. Some slow-moving specs may still offer negotiation room on real orders. Terminal procurement remains need-based, and volume breakthroughs are unlikely.

2. Welded & Galvanized Pipe: Tangshan Holds, Beijing Inches Up

Lange Steel’s weekly report for North China welded pipe (Week 33, August 10–14) reveals a market characterized by “cost floor + demand ceiling = stuck pricing.”

Price Summary (4″×3.75mm spec, as of August 14)

Upstream cost structure: Tangshan Qian’an billet at ¥2,940/ton (flat WoW); hot-rolled strip at ¥3,145/ton (+10 WoW). Mill-gate welded pipe 4″ at ~¥3,300/ton, galvanized 4″ at ~¥3,870/ton — both basically flat. The cost floor is firmly in place.

Inventory Dynamics

As of August 12, North China mainstream pipe mill statistics showed:

Total inventory: 608,800 tons (+33,500 WoW, +32,000 MoM, +67,000 YoY)

Strip steel: 263,800 tons (+19,500 WoW)

Welded pipe: 166,000 tons (+12,000 WoW)

Galvanized pipe: 179,000 tons (+2,000 WoW)

Daily average trading volume: 26,700 tons (+300 WoW, but -1,300 YoY)

The year-on-year inventory increase of 67,000 tons is significant — it reflects the broader demand compression in China’s construction and infrastructure sectors. However, the week-on-week increase is modest, and traders have been actively destocking rather than building positions, which keeps the inventory risk manageable.

3. Spiral Welded Pipe: Tangshan Mill Pricing

For spiral welded pipe (SY/T 5037-2023 standard, Q235B), Tangshan-area mills offered the following structure as of mid-August:

Specification (mm)

Mill

Approx. Price (CNY/ton)

219×6

720×8

Tangshan Heyuan / Jinghua

~3,400–3,500

Spiral pipe pricing remained in a tight band across all diameters, with no significant specification-based premium — reflecting weak demand differentiation and mills’ preference to maintain production volume over margin optimization. For large-diameter water transmission and piling applications, this price stability is favorable for project budgeting.

4. Why Prices Are Stuck: The Cost-Demand Squeeze

The current pipe market exhibits a textbook “stuck market” — a state where neither significant upside nor downside price movement is sustainable:

Cost floor (upstream): Hot-rolled strip, the primary input for welded pipe and butt weld fittings, saw its price edge up ¥10/ton to ¥3,145/ton. Tangshan billet held at ¥2,940/ton. Iron ore and coke prices moved in opposite directions, preventing unified cost-direction signals, but the aggregate raw material cost remained sufficient to prevent deep price cuts. Mill profitability is thin but not negative, so there’s no desperate sell-off pressure.

Demand ceiling (downstream): Traditional off-season demand weakness persisted. Mid-week weather improvements (rain to clear in Beijing-Tangshan-Tianjin) slightly improved terminal procurement sentiment, but overall demand release remained weak. Intermediaries and end-users universally avoided batch stockpiling, executing “buy-as-needed” strategies. The lack of sustained rigid demand prevented any price rally.

Mill behavior: Faced with thin margins and sluggish sales, mills chose output adjustments over aggressive price cuts. The “anti-involution” campaign by industry associations continued to encourage demand-based production scheduling rather than overproduction. This voluntary supply discipline is the key reason prices haven’t collapsed despite rising inventories.

5. What This Means for International Pipe Fitting Buyers

For overseas buyers of carbon steel pipe fittings (elbows, tees, flanges, reducers, caps) and welded pipe products, the mid-August market snapshot offers several actionable insights:

Predictable pricing window: The “stuck market” means quotes from Chinese mills are likely to remain stable for the next 2–4 weeks. This allows reliable cost estimation for project budgets and tender submissions without fear of sudden material cost swings.

Export competitiveness: With domestic demand weak and inventories elevated, Chinese mills have strong motivation to pursue export orders. Mills seeking to fill production slots may offer favorable terms — particularly for standard-spec butt weld fittings (A234 WPB elbows, A234 WPB tees, A105 flanges) where production scheduling is flexible.

Raw material linkage: Steel is the primary cost driver for pipe fittings. Current Tangshan billet at ¥2,940/ton and strip at ¥3,145/ton represent cyclical lows. For buyers familiar with steel-linked pricing models, this is an opportune moment to negotiate mill contracts indexed to raw material benchmarks.

Logistics consideration: The off-season also means lower domestic logistics congestion. Tianjin port (the primary export hub for Hebei pipe fitting manufacturers) typically has better container availability and shipping schedules during August–September compared to the Q4 peak season.

Quality consistency: Production cuts don’t affect quality — if anything, mills running at lower capacity utilization often maintain more consistent quality control. For ASME B16.9 butt weld fittings and ASME B16.5 flanges, the current market dynamics don’t introduce any quality risk.

6. Outlook: What to Watch Through Late August

Terminal demand recovery: Watch for any uptick in infrastructure project lettings and construction site activity as the off-season transitions toward autumn. A demand pulse could briefly tighten supply.

Futures market direction: Black-sector futures (rebar, hot-rolled coil) remain the primary sentiment driver for spot pipe prices. Key support and resistance levels will dictate intraweek pricing bias.

Mill inventory destocking: If weekly inventory turns from accumulation to drawdown, it signals improving demand and could firm up prices. Monitor Lange Steel’s weekly mill survey for the inflection point.

Raw material cost shifts: Iron ore (62% Fe fines) and met coke prices will determine whether the cost floor holds or softens. Any meaningful raw material decline would eventually transmit to pipe and fitting prices with a 2–3 week lag.

90 Degree Butt Weld Elbow Weight Formula

For carbon steel butt weld elbows, the weight is most commonly calculated on the basis of the 90 degree long radius (1.5D) elbow, because it is the most widely used type. The formula is:

W = 0.0387 × S × (D − S) × R / 1000 (kg per piece)

Where:

W — weight in kilograms per piece

S — wall thickness in millimetres

D — outside diameter in millimetres

R — bending radius, where LR (long radius) = 1.5 × D and SR (short radius) = 1 × D

For a 45 degree elbow, the weight is approximately 0.6 times the weight of a 90 degree elbow of the same size and schedule.

Worked Example: 12″ Sch 40 90° LR Elbow

Let us calculate the weight of a 90 degree long radius seamless elbow, 12″ (DN300), Sch 40, ASTM A234 WPB.

Outside diameter (D) = 323.9 mm

Wall thickness (S) = 9.52 mm

Radius (R) = 1.5 × 323.9 = 485.85 mm

W = 0.0387 × 9.52 × (323.9 − 9.52) × 485.85 / 1000 ≈ 56 kg/piece

This matches the reference table value for DN300 (58.3 kg), confirming the calculation method is accurate for estimating shipping weight and material cost.

Why Weight Matters for Your Order

Knowing the accurate fitting weight is essential for three practical reasons: it determines the freight cost for sea or air shipment, it lets you budget raw material accurately, and it helps you verify the wall thickness you specified. If you order in bulk, even a small difference per piece adds up to significant tonnage.

For carbon steel and stainless steel butt weld fittings, we supply elbows, tees, reducers, flanges and caps to ASME B16.9 elbow and related standards with full mill test certificates.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the weight of a 45 degree elbow?

Multiply the weight of the equivalent 90 degree elbow by 0.6. For example, a 6″ Sch 40 45° LR elbow weighs about 11.2 × 0.6 = 6.7 kg.

What is the difference between LR and SR elbow weight?

Short radius (1D) elbows use R = 1 × D instead of 1.5 × D, so they weigh roughly two-thirds of the equivalent long radius elbow.

Do you provide a complete weight chart up to DN1200?

Yes. Contact our team and we will send the full reference weight table for all sizes and schedules, including stainless steel grades 304/316.

Is the weight affected by material grade?

Yes. Stainless steel weighs slightly more than carbon steel (about 7.93 vs 7.85 g/cm³). For critical projects we recalculate using the exact material density.

Need custom sizes or a confirmed weight list for your project? Request a quote and our engineers will respond within 24 hours.

Market Outlook for Importers

Fittings flat, steel rising: upstream raw-material costs are ticking up while fitting quotes hold. Historically fittings follow within 1–2 weeks.

Order timing: for standard carbon-steel items, locking orders now may beat the next round of mill price increases.

Specialty products: large-diameter seamless elbows (610–630mm) and thick-wall items remain tight and price-resilient.

Tangshan Steel Rebounds Across the Board on August 12

After days of bottoming out, Tangshan steel prices rebounded across the board on August 12, 2026 — no single specification posted a decline. Rebar inched up 10 CNY/t on key diameters, channel and I-beam sections followed with +10, H-beam jumped 30–40 CNY/t on some sizes, hot rolled coil rose 10 CNY/t across all specs, and hot rolled strip gained 10–20 CNY/t.

This broad advance is an important confirmation signal for international buyers who have been waiting on the sidelines since late July. The market appears to have stabilized at cycle lows and started a tentative rebound — exactly the pattern we flagged in our early-August outlook.

Cangzhou Pipe Fittings Hold Steady

In contrast to the upstream rebound, Cangzhou pipe fitting prices remained flat on August 12. Flanges, seamless elbows, straight-seam elbows, ERW pipe and seamless pipe all held their August levels, as downstream fitting demand has not yet caught up with the raw-material rally.

What This Means for Buyers

The divergence between a rebounding upstream and a flat fittings market is a classic lag effect. When steel prices turn up, pipe fitting quotes usually follow within 1–2 weeks as mills pass through raw-material costs. If you are planning an order for Q4, the current window — upstream rising but fittings still flat — is a favorable moment to lock in prices before fitting quotes catch up.

We recommend confirming quotes and securing delivery slots now for high-moving items (flanges DN50–DN200, elbows 60–219mm), rather than waiting for the rebound to fully transmit to fittings.

Introduction

When you need reliable pipe connections for small-bore piping (typically NPS ½” to 4″), forged fittings are the standard choice. Unlike butt weld fittings — which are formed from pipe or plate — forged fittings are manufactured by hot forging of solid steel billets, then machined to precise dimensions. This process produces fittings with superior grain structure, higher pressure ratings, and tighter dimensional tolerances.

Within the forged fitting category, two connection types dominate: Socket Weld (SW) and Threaded. Selecting the right one for your application is critical for system integrity.

1. Socket Weld Fittings

How They Work

The pipe is inserted into a recessed “socket” in the fitting, then joined with a fillet weld around the outside of the fitting. A small expansion gap (≈ 1.5 mm) is left at the bottom of the socket to allow for thermal expansion of the pipe.

Key Advantages

Full-penetration alternative: Although the weld is a fillet, the socket design provides a strong mechanical connection before welding, ensuring proper alignment.

No thread leakage risk: Welded joint eliminates the potential leak path that threaded connections can develop under thermal cycling.

Better fatigue performance: The smooth socket interior avoids the stress concentration points that threads create.

Higher pressure rating: Socket weld fittings are generally rated higher than threaded fittings of the same class.

Typical Applications

High-pressure piping systems (Class 2000, 3000, 6000, 9000)

Toxic, flammable, or expensive fluids where zero-leakage is mandatory

Steam and condensate lines

Instrument connections and sample points

Chemical and petrochemical process piping NPS 2″ and smaller

2. Threaded Fittings

How They Work

The pipe is screwed into the fitting using tapered pipe threads (NPT per ASME B1.20.1, or BSP per BS 21). The thread taper creates a mechanical seal, enhanced by thread sealant or PTFE tape.

Key Advantages

No welding required: Ideal for field installations where hot work permits are difficult to obtain, or in hazardous areas.

Quick assembly and disassembly: Threaded joints can be made up and broken with simple hand tools — no welders, no radiography.

Lower installed cost: No weld labor, no NDT, no post-weld heat treatment.

Retrofit-friendly: Easy to add branches or modify existing systems without shutdown.

Typical Applications

Low-pressure, non-hazardous utility systems

Instrument air, nitrogen, and plant air piping

Fire protection sprinkler systems

Plumbing and HVAC piping

Temporary piping and pre-commissioning bypasses

4. Pressure Class Ratings (ASME B16.11)

Forged fittings are designated by class numbers that correspond to the pressure-temperature rating of the fitting:

Class 2000: Threaded only — for low-pressure utility service.

Class 3000: Available in both socket weld and threaded — the most commonly specified class for general process piping.

Class 6000: Socket weld — for high-pressure service, often used in hydrocarbon and chemical processes.

Class 9000: Socket weld — for very high-pressure specialty applications.

Note: Class numbers in B16.11 are NOT directly equivalent to ASME B16.5 flange class numbers. Always refer to the pressure-temperature tables in B16.11.

5. Available Forged Fitting Types

Both socket weld and threaded connections are available in the same fitting shapes:

Elbows: 45° and 90° — change direction of flow

Tees: Equal and reducing — create branch connections

Couplings: Full and half — join two pipes in a straight line

Crosses: 4-way branch connections (less common, usually avoided in process piping)

Unions: Three-piece design for quick disconnection

Caps: Close the end of a pipe

Plugs and Bushings: Close off threaded openings

Street Elbows: One end male, one end female — useful for tight installations

6. Material Grades

Forged fittings are produced to the same material standards as flanges:

Carbon Steel: ASTM A105 / A105N — the workhorse grade. Forged, normalized for improved toughness.

Low-Temp Carbon Steel: ASTM A350 LF1 / LF2 / LF3 — impact-tested at −46°C (LF2) and −101°C (LF3).

Alloy Steel: ASTM A182 F11 / F22 / F91 — for high-temperature service in power and petrochemical plants.

Stainless Steel: ASTM A182 F304/L / F316/L / F321 / F347 — for corrosion resistance, hygiene, and low-temperature service.

7. Common Sourcing Mistakes

Specifying threaded fittings for toxic service — Most piping codes (ASME B31.3) require welded connections for Category M (lethal) fluid service. Threaded connections are not permitted.

Not specifying thread type — NPT (American) and BSP (British) are NOT interchangeable. Confusion leads to unusable inventory.

Ignoring socket weld gap corrosion risk — In stainless steel systems handling corrosive media, the crevice at the socket bottom can become a corrosion initiation point. Consider butt weld fittings instead for highly corrosive service.

Over-ordering Class 6000 when 3000 suffices — Class 6000 fittings are thicker, heavier, and more expensive. Specify the class that matches your design pressure, not higher.

Conclusion

For small-bore, high-pressure, or hazardous-service piping, socket weld forged fittings provide the leak-tight integrity that critical systems demand. For non-critical utility services where speed of installation and ease of maintenance matter more, threaded forged fittings are the practical and economical choice.

Introduction

Flanges are the mechanical connectors that join pipes, valves, pumps, and other equipment into a complete piping system. Unlike butt weld fittings — which are permanent welded joints — flanges allow for periodic disassembly, making them essential wherever inspection, cleaning, or maintenance access is needed.

Among the dozen or so flange types defined by ASME B16.5, two dominate industrial procurement: Weld Neck (WN) and Slip-On (SO). Understanding when to use each can save you both money and engineering headaches.

1. Weld Neck Flanges (WNRF / WNRF)

Design Features

Weld neck flanges have a long, tapered hub that is butt-welded to the pipe. This hub gradually transfers stress from the flange ring to the pipe wall, making WN flanges the strongest and most fatigue-resistant flange type.

Butt weld joint = full-penetration weld, X-ray quality

Tapered hub reduces stress concentration at the weld

Available in Raised Face (RF) and Ring Type Joint (RTJ) face types

When to Specify Weld Neck

High-pressure systems (Class 300 and above)

High-temperature services where thermal cycling is expected

Critical applications requiring radiographic inspection of the weld

Systems subject to vibration, pulsation, or repeated bending loads

LNG, refinery, petrochemical, and power generation piping

2. Slip-On Flanges (SORF)

Design Features

Slip-on flanges slide over the pipe and are fillet-welded on both the inside and outside of the flange. The pipe “slips on” — hence the name.

Two fillet welds (inside + outside) instead of one butt weld

Lower fabrication cost — no bevel preparation, easier alignment

Available in Raised Face (RF) and Flat Face (FF)

When to Specify Slip-On

Low-pressure, non-critical services (Class 150 and Class 300)

Where cost efficiency is a priority and the service is non-hazardous

Cooling water, fire water, utility piping, HVAC systems

Temporary piping or systems requiring frequent modification

Values decrease with rising temperature. Always verify with ASME B16.5 tables for your specific design temperature.

5. Material Grades for Flanges

Carbon Steel: ASTM A105 (forgings, NPS ≤ 24), ASTM A105N (normalized for improved toughness).

Low-Temp Carbon Steel: ASTM A350 LF2 — service down to −46°C, common in cryogenic and Arctic installations.

Alloy Steel: ASTM A182 F5, F9, F11, F22, F91 — for high-temperature refinery and power plant service.

Stainless Steel: ASTM A182 F304/L, F316/L, F321, F347 — for corrosive and hygienic applications.

Duplex: ASTM A182 F51 (UNS S31803), F53 (UNS S32750) — for offshore, desalination, and chloride environments.

6. Common Procurement Mistakes

Specifying SO flanges for high-pressure service — Fillet welds do not provide full penetration and are not suitable for NDT radiography. If the code requires RT, you need weld neck.

Forgetting face finish requirements — RTJ flanges require a specific serrated finish per ASME B16.5. Raised Face flanges typically use a 125–250 μin Ra finish. Specifying the wrong finish leads to gasket leaks.

Not ordering bolts and gaskets together — Flange assemblies require matching stud bolts (ASTM A193 B7/B8) and gaskets (spiral wound per ASME B16.20). Sourcing them separately often leads to mismatched materials.

Confusing A105 with A105N — Non-normalized A105 may lack sufficient toughness for low-temperature or impact-test-required service. Always confirm whether normalization is required by your project specification.

Conclusion

For critical, high-pressure, or high-temperature piping, weld neck flanges are the correct choice despite their higher cost. For non-critical utility services, slip-on flanges offer a cost-effective and installation-friendly alternative.
